What is Water Management?

Water management or water resource management is the process of storing, routing, or utilization the water from its various resources for optimal usage for the present and future.
Talking about various sources, efficient water management of dams ensure the safety of life and property by reducing the risk of floods, and also helps in proper agricultural/irrigation usages.
Irrigation Management System in turn helps in optimal utilization of limited water available for best agricultural outcomes in terms of production.
Similarly, a drainage management system involves budgeting of water for various purposes, analysis of drainage water systems, and managing groundwater withdrawal rates.
Why is Water Management important?
As already described above, water management mainly aims at the proper utilization of water resources.
As per data of world bank, 40% of our present population is living in water-scarce areas. And around the whole world may face a 40% water shortage from the present times by 2030 if we continue ourselves with the current practices.
This is due to the fact that our world population is growing at a fast rate and by 2050.
We will have 9 billion people on our earth, the feeding of which would be a very much challenging task, given that that will require a 60% increase in agricultural production and 15% more water withdrawal.
In near future itself, i.e. by 2025, nearly 1.8 billion people will be facing absolute water scarcity.
The further agitation of the problem arises due to many other challenges like hydrological uncertainties and natural calamities like floods, drought, etc.
So water scarcity is one side of the coin, and on the other side, around 1.5 billion people who are living around deltas and basins are vulnerable to floods and storms.
All of the above challenges are enough to make us realize the importance of water management.
Some of the ways to save water
Till now, we knew that water scarcity is a critical issue. So, we need to take important steps for the conversation of water and its resources.
So, let’s have a look at some of the ways with which we can save water and take a step closer to the concept of sustainability.
A. Water Harvesting
The process of saving water for its best use is defined as Water Harvesting. It helps to reduce the shortage of water supply, especially in summer when the groundwater level dips below its normal level.
Water harvesting is done in the following 2 ways –
1. Rainwater Harvesting
As the name suggests, it’s basically conserving rainwater for proper usage.
Rainwater is collected with the help of roof-like structures and is stored in artificial or natural reservoirs, rather than allowing it to runoff.
2. Groundwater Harvesting
The collected water may also be used for long-term storage or groundwater recharge via allowing it to percolate through its storage, which is called groundwater harvesting.
B. Drip Irrigation
Drip irrigation is a type of micro-irrigation system where water is allowed to drip into the roots of plants, either from the top surface or below the roots using a mechanical apparatus to ensures the utmost use of water supplied to the plants
C. Following Water-Saving Practices
Water management is an easy practice and should be applied in our day to day life.
We may start by checking and fixing leaking taps and avoiding excessive usage of water for common household activities like brushing our teeth, bathing, cooking, etc.
Finally, educating others to create awareness of water scarcity and water management practices will also help.
